What is INEC?

The Independent National Electoral Commission is the constitutional body responsible for organising federal and state elections and regulating key parts of Nigeria's electoral process.

INEC's constitutional mandate

INEC is established by the Constitution. Its functions include organising elections to specified offices, arranging voter registration, monitoring political parties and delimiting constituencies as provided by law.

What INEC does during an election

INEC publishes the timetable, receives nominations, recruits and trains officials, provides materials, accredits voters, conducts polling and manages collation and returns under the Electoral Act and its guidelines.

Limits and accountability

INEC must act within the Constitution, the Electoral Act and court decisions. Election petitions and other legal challenges are determined by the courts or tribunals with jurisdiction, not by the Commission alone.
