Apapa Customs seizes drugs, expired goods worth N43.58bn

The Nigeria Customs Service says its Apapa Area Command intercepted 13 containers of drugs, expired goods and other restricted items with a duty-paid value of N43.58 billion.

Highlights

• Customs Comptroller-General Adewale Adeniyi said the seizures included narcotics and controlled pharmaceuticals, security-sensitive equipment and expired goods for human use.
• He said one container carried 8,287 parcels of cannabis sativa weighing 4,145kg, while another held 1,700 cartons containing 169,998 bottles of codeine syrup.
• Customs said another container was found with 108 high-definition dual-camera drones, while five containers carried expired items including tomato ketchup, antiseptic liquid, vaginal tablets and disposable nappies.
• Adeniyi said the cannabis seizures were made with support from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and intelligence from international security partners.
• He warned about the abuse of prohibited substances such as codeine among young people and said the issue had wider social consequences.
