FG moves to tighten tertiary accreditation and admissions rules

The Federal Government has started a review of accreditation and quality assurance for tertiary institutions, while also saying it has paid lecturers’ academic tools allowance for January to August 2026.

• Education Minister Tunji Alausa said the current accreditation system should be made continuous, digital and harder to manipulate.
• He warned institutions against presenting borrowed staff, equipment or facilities during accreditation visits.
• Officials who fail to comply with admission and accreditation rules could lose their jobs, while private institutions that breach standards could lose licences.
• The ministry said it wants verification to reflect an institution’s actual and sustainable capacity, using tools such as geospatial mapping, geotagging and digital identification.
• The government also announced full payment of the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance to academic staff in federal universities, polytechnics and colleges of education for January to August 2026.
